Dawny gmach Miejskiej Kasy Oszczędności

The former Municipal Savings Bank stands out for the stone masks of lions and squirrels carved into its facade. This building rose in the early twentieth century, designed by architect Ludwig Hoffmann to hold the city's wealth. While the bank vaults long ago emptied, the stone animals remain frozen in their duties. During the final months of the second world war, the structure served as a makeshift hospital for soldiers, surviving the heavy shelling that leveled most of the surrounding street block.
