Fourteen bronze figures emerge from the sidewalk on one side of the street and sink back into the pavement on the other. They represent ordinary people in mid-stride, carrying briefcases or pushing strollers, gradually disappearing into the ground. Sculptor Jerzy Kalina created these statues in nineteen seventy-seven, though they remained hidden in a warehouse for nearly thirty years. When they finally appeared here in two thousand five, they arrived on the anniversary of the nineteen eighty-one declaration of martial law in Poland.
