The massive, windowless concrete cube of the Renoma department store dominates the southern edge of plac Wolności. When this square served as a parade ground for the Prussian military, soldiers drilled on the very site where the city later staged its grandest protests. In nineteen eighty-two, thousands of residents filled this space to demand freedom during martial law. The ZOMO riot police blocked the exits, trapping the crowd, and used water cannons to push people back against the surrounding stone walls.
