Lowndes Square

Lowndes Square takes its name from William Lowndes, a prominent landowner and politician who served as Secretary to the Treasury during the reign of Queen Anne. His family held this land during the eighteenth century, long before the architect Thomas Cubitt transformed the surrounding marshy fields into the grand residential district you see today. You can still hear the name pronounced as lownz, which rhymes with sounds.
