The plaque you are approaching marks the exact spot where one of the world's most recognizable actors began his life. Before he was known as Sir Michael Caine, he was born here in 1933 as Maurice Joseph Micklewhite. He entered the world in the charity wing of the former Saint Olave's Hospital, which once dominated this site before it was demolished and redeveloped into the housing estate you see today.
