The Royal Foundation of St Katharine was established in eleven forty-seven by Queen Matilda, the wife of King Stephen. She founded the institution as a hospital for the poor and infirm to honor the memory of two of her children who died in infancy. For nearly seven centuries, the original site stood just east of the Tower of London, serving as an independent sanctuary and community hub.
