London Docks

The London Docks in Wapping were built behind massive, high brick walls explicitly designed to thwart the rampant river theft that plagued the Thames in the eighteenth century. Before these enclosed docks opened in 1805, ships anchored in the open river where organized gangs of lightermen, watermen, and corrupt officials regularly plundered cargoes. The new secure perimeter finally allowed merchants to store valuable goods like ivory, spices, and spirits in specialized warehouses without the constant threat of organized robbery. These walls defined the landscape of Wapping and transformed it from a chaotic stretch of marshland into one of the most secure and productive trading hubs in the British Empire.
