What began as a botched jewelry store robbery in the nearby district of Houndsditch resulted in the deaths of three police officers, prompting a massive manhunt. Investigators eventually tracked two of the suspects to a tenement building at number 100 Sidney Street. When police arrived to surround the location, they found themselves outgunned by the suspects, who wielded high-velocity Mauser pistols that far outclassed the standard-issue equipment of the time.
