Battle of Cable Street

Cable Street takes its name from the rope walks that once lined this part of the East End. In the centuries before the street became a historic site of political conflict, laborers stretched hemp along its length to twist into thick ship cables and ropes for the vessels anchored in the nearby Pool of London. This industrial heritage defined the physical layout of the area, creating the narrow, straight corridor that would later become a tactical bottleneck during one of the most significant confrontations in British political history.
