Town of Ramsgate

The Town of Ramsgate stands as a quiet riverside landmark with a history reaching back to the fourteen sixties. Originally known as The Hostel, it served as a tavern during the Wars of the Roses and later became the Red Cow in the sixteenth century. It eventually adopted its current name in eighteen eleven to attract fishermen from the town of Ramsgate in Kent. These fishermen regularly brought their catches to the adjacent Wapping Old Stairs to avoid paying the steep river taxes levied further upstream at the Billingsgate Fish Market.
