Cartwright Gardens

Cartwright Gardens was originally known as Burton Crescent and served as a speculative housing development by the ambitious builder James Burton. In the early nineteenth century, Burton designed the crescent with a distinctive fan shape to maximize the number of houses that could overlook a private communal garden. This layout demonstrated his departure from the standard straight terrace designs that dominated London architecture at the time.
