Connaught Hall, London

Connaught Hall began its life in 1919 not as a standard university building, but as a deeply personal memorial. It was founded by Prince Arthur, the Duke of Connaught and the third son of Queen Victoria, to honor the memory of his wife, the Duchess of Connaught, who had passed away two years earlier. For its first decade, it operated as a private men-only residence before the Duke gifted the entire institution to the University of London in 1928 as a permanent part of the city's academic landscape.
