The British Museum stands as a massive anchor for the entire Bloomsbury district. Its sprawling collection began in seventeen fifty-three with the private hoard of an Anglo-Irish physician named Sir Hans Sloane. He spent decades gathering over seventy thousand objects, ranging from botanical specimens and coins to ancient artifacts. When he died, he bequeathed this vast assortment to the nation on the condition that it remain accessible to curious people, effectively creating the world's first public national museum. It opened its doors in seventeen fifty-nine, nearly two decades before the American Declaration of Independence was signed.
