Neptune and Triton

The marble masterpiece Neptune and Triton stands as a defining work of the Baroque period, carved by Gian Lorenzo Bernini between sixteen twenty-two and sixteen twenty-three. It captures the sea god and his son, Triton, in a moment of dynamic, swirling energy as they rise from a shell to command the waves. Bernini was only twenty-four years old when he completed this commission for the garden of a Roman villa, marking his arrival as the most significant sculptor of his generation. Unlike many static statues of the era, this piece breaks its own physical boundaries, designed to be viewed from every angle as if the figures are surging through the air.
