Sloane Square

Sloane Square was once known as the Great Bloody Field. This grim name reflected its reputation as a lawless, marshy no man's land that travelers had to cross to reach the King's Road. The area was notorious for its proximity to a site called Bloody Bridge, named after a murder committed there in the late sixteenth century. Beneath the ground you are walking on today, the Westbourne River still flows toward the Thames, though it is now contained within an iron conduit hidden deep underground.
