Myddelton Square

Myddelton Square was once a large field known as Butchers Mantells. In the early nineteenth century, the New River Company transformed this open land into the largest residential square in Clerkenwell. The company named the development after Sir Hugh Myddelton, the seventeenth-century entrepreneur who built the New River, an ambitious canal system designed to carry fresh water from Hertfordshire springs to the growing city of London.
