Wesley's Chapel

Wesley's Chapel opened on November 1, 1778, as the central London headquarters for the Methodist movement. John Wesley, the founder of the faith, personally laid the foundation stone and described the finished building as perfectly neat but not fine. He chose this site on City Road to replace his original base, a repurposed cannon factory nearby known as the Foundery. The chapel stands today as a monument to the movement's humble beginnings, serving as the Mother Church of World Methodism.
