One Nation Under CCTV

monument

The mural known as One Nation Under CCTV appeared on a Royal Mail building on Newman Street in two thousand and seven. It featured a child in a red hoodie carefully painting the words One Nation Under CCTV on the wall while a police officer and his dog looked on. The artist chose to position this imagery just inches away from a functioning surveillance camera. By placing the work under the lens it critiqued, the artist effectively turned the act of creating the mural into a public performance of the very state surveillance he was calling into question.
