Scala Theatre

The site you are approaching on Charlotte Street once hosted one of the most storied stages in London. Long before the modern office block that stands here today, this location housed a succession of venues starting as far back as seventeen seventy-two. It became a magnet for drama and spectacle, eventually taking the name Scala Theatre in nineteen oh five. The name itself was a tribute to its most unusual architectural feature, a pair of grand staircases that descended from the dress circle directly into the stalls, passing underneath the boxes. In Italian, the word for staircase is scala.
