St John's Square

St John's Square was not originally built as a public space but as the fortified inner sanctum of the Priory of the Knights Hospitaller. Founded in the twelfth century, this precinct served as the English headquarters for the crusading order of the Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. Behind these walls, the knights maintained a powerful and wealthy base that played a significant role in both medieval religion and military life.
