Albert Embankment

The Albert Embankment serves as a grand riverside promenade that fundamentally altered the character of this stretch of the Thames in the late eighteen sixties. Before its construction, this area was a congested tangle of timber yards, boat builders, and small industrial potteries. The project effectively wiped away the historic riverfront road known as Fore Street to create a smooth, modern thoroughfare. Workers during the construction process frequently unearthed fragments of Elizabethan-era pottery, remnants of the small-scale manufacturing that once defined the river's edge long before the site was reclaimed from the mud.
