Lambeth Basaveshwara Statue

monument

The bronze bust you see here commemorates Basaveshwara, a twelfth-century Indian philosopher, poet, and social reformer. It stands on the Albert Embankment, intentionally positioned to face the British Houses of Parliament across the River Thames. This location was chosen to highlight a conceptual link between the democratic ideals of the United Kingdom and the work of Basaveshwara, who championed human rights, gender equality, and freedom of speech in his own time.
