Statue of John Cartwright

The bronze statue before you commemorates John Cartwright, an eighteenth century naval officer turned political radical who earned the title Father of Reform. Sculpted by George Clarke and installed in eighteen thirty one, the figure depicts Cartwright in his traditional knee breeches, seated as if in the midst of an intellectual debate. He stands in what is now Cartwright Gardens, formerly known as Burton Crescent, where he resided during the final years of his life.
