Meanwhile Gardens

The name of this park comes from a bureaucratic compromise. In nineteen seventy-six, a local sculptor named Jamie McCullough approached the council to transform four acres of derelict wasteland into a community space. Because the council had no firm plans for the property but wanted to retain the right to reclaim it at any moment, they granted McCullough permission to use the land only for the meanwhile. The label stuck, and the community adopted it as a statement of defiance and endurance. It remains a fitting title, as the organization continues to operate part of the site without a formal lease to this day.
