On the night of November 23, 1984, the busiest station on the London Underground became a trap for nearly one thousand commuters. A fire broke out in a materials storage room at the north end of the Victoria line platform, where contractors were working on station renovations. Thick, black smoke quickly filled the tunnels and booking hall, forcing passengers to evacuate through darkened, suffocating corridors.
