Lower Marsh

The ground beneath your feet on Lower Marsh was once a treacherous, waterlogged landscape known as Lambeth Marsh. Up until the early nineteenth century, this area remained largely undeveloped marshland, save for an ancient raised road that navigated the boggy terrain. Historians believe this primary route may even trace back to Roman times, serving as a vital connection when the rest of the land was frequently submerged by the Thames. It was only when the marsh was finally drained in the eighteenth century that the land became stable enough for the small-scale, haphazard construction that formed the charmingly irregular streetscape you see today.
