The Royal Waterloo Hospital for Children and Women stands as a distinctive piece of architecture on the corner of Waterloo Bridge Road and Stamford Street, characterized by its Lombardic Renaissance style and a notable Doulton-ware porch. It began in eighteen sixteen as the Universal Dispensary for Children, founded by Doctor John Bunnell Davis. At the time, the institution was revolutionary because most London hospitals refused to admit children, and the word universal in its name declared that sick infants from any area could receive care.
