Bankside Power Station

You are standing before what was once called an industrial cathedral. Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the architect who gave London its classic red telephone box and the majestic Liverpool Cathedral, designed this building to command the skyline while maintaining a respectful distance from the religious landmark across the river. He deliberately restricted the height of the single central chimney to ninety-nine meters so it would never loom over the dome of Saint Pauls Cathedral. The structure itself is a massive exercise in restraint, utilizing over four million bricks to create a symmetrical, imposing presence on the South Bank.
