Goddess of Democracy (San Francisco)

The bronze statue you see in Portsmouth Square is a ten-foot-tall replica of the original Goddess of Democracy, which was famously erected by student protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square in the spring of 1989. While the original was built in just four days out of foam and papier-mâché, this permanent version was cast in bronze by San Francisco sculptor Thomas Marsh and a group of anonymous volunteers. It was officially dedicated on June 4, 1994, exactly five years after the original statue was destroyed by military tanks during the crackdown in Beijing.
