Old Saint Mary's Cathedral stands as a physical map of nineteenth-century global trade. When it was built in 1854, its granite foundation was quarried and cut in China, while the bricks for its walls were manufactured in New England and hauled around Cape Horn as ballast in the holds of sailing ships. This massive construction project made it the tallest building in all of California at the time of its completion.
