Market Street Railway Substation

The brick and sandstone building standing at the corner of Fillmore and Turk Streets is a veteran of the nineteen hundred and six earthquake and fire. When the city lay in ruins, this station remained structurally sound and functional, allowing the Fillmore Street rail line to become the very first transit route restored to service in the wake of the disaster. Its ability to convert high-voltage electricity into power for the city's streetcars made it the heartbeat of local transportation for much of the early twentieth century.
