Bay Bridge Lookout

The Bay Bridge Lookout sits at the edge of the Embarcadero, marked by a massive, rusted steel propeller salvaged from the steamship SS San Mateo. This ferry once carried passengers across the water before the bridge existed. In nineteen thirty-six, when the span finally opened, it turned the commute into a drive and rendered the ferry fleet obsolete. That propeller stands as the only fragment of the old transit system left on this pier, pointing directly toward the steel towers of the bridge.
