Lion (Perry)

The bronze lion sculpture you see resting near the Music Concourse owes its survival to a stroke of luck during the devastation of the nineteen-oh-six earthquake. Before it was gifted to the city, the piece sat in the showroom of Shreve and Company, a local jewelry firm. When the massive earthquake struck and triggered the fires that swept through downtown, the showroom burned, yet the sculpture emerged from the ruins intact. It was donated to the park shortly after that catastrophe, serving as a rare survivor of the disaster that reshaped the city.
