The striking marble structure standing on the edge of Lloyd Lake is known as the Portals of the Past. These six ionic columns are the only remains of the grand Nob Hill mansion once owned by railroad executive Alban Nelson Towne. When the 1906 earthquake and subsequent fires leveled most of the neighborhood, the entrance to the Towne estate survived as a singular, haunting fragment amid the ruins.
