You are approaching the San Francisco Playhouse, which occupies a unique space inside the Kensington Park Hotel. The theater is tucked away on the second floor of a building that began its life in nineteen twenty-five as a grand lodge for the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Designed in a striking Spanish Gothic style by architects Frederick Meyer and Albin Johnson, the building once served as a private sanctuary for the city's influential lodge members, complete with an ornate ballroom and meeting rooms.
