The building you see before you, The Masonic, sits on land that once held a grand mansion belonging to Alban N. Towne, a high-ranking official of the Southern Pacific Railroad. When the 1906 earthquake and fire leveled the mansions of Nob Hill, these ruins left behind a set of six lonely marble Ionic columns near what is now the building’s footprint. These columns were eventually moved to a quiet spot by Lloyd Lake in Golden Gate Park, where they still stand today, serving as a silent reminder of the vanished Gilded Age estate that once occupied this very ground.
