Museum of Russian Culture

The Museum of Russian Culture began as a sanctuary for history, established in 1948 by Russian immigrants who fled their homeland during and after the chaotic civil war that followed the 1917 revolution. Many of these families arrived in San Francisco by way of China and the Far East, bringing with them only the personal effects and documents they could carry. They founded this archive specifically to prevent their cultural identity from vanishing, transforming their private keepsakes into a public collection of journals, military uniforms, and rare pre-revolutionary periodicals. Today, it remains one of the few places in the world that maintains an authentic, grassroots perspective on the life of the Russian diaspora during the early twentieth century.
