In Chan Kaajal Park

landmark

In Chan Kaajal Park marks a significant shift for this neighborhood, occupying land that functioned as a private parking lot until its opening in June 2017. Its name is a phrase in the Yucatec Maya language that translates to My Little Town, a title chosen by the local community to honor the presence of Mayan immigrants who have settled here from Mexico since the 1990s. This park represents a long-term advocacy effort led by the local grassroots organization PODER, which partnered with city agencies to transform the paved space into a public green area. Its completion was a milestone for the city, as it stood as the first new neighborhood park built in San Francisco in over a decade.
