You are standing in front of a storefront that appears to be an authentic shop for seafaring scoundrels. Known as the Pirate Supply Store, this whimsical establishment sells eye patches, spyglasses, and various treasures for the aspiring buccaneer. The shop serves as a deliberate, creative front for 826 Valencia, a nonprofit writing and tutoring center hidden in the back. When the organization was founded in 2002 by author Dave Eggers and educator Nínive Calegari, city zoning ordinances required the street-level space to be a retail business. They embraced this constraint by creating a pirate-themed store, which provides funding for their free literary programs while offering a playful environment that helps young students feel comfortable and imaginative.
