Bernal Heights Open Space

park garden

The grassy, windswept summit of Bernal Heights rises like a natural fortress above the surrounding city grid. This hill once served as a lookout for Spanish explorers and later became a popular site for early twentieth-century developers who envisioned an exclusive residential park. In the nineteen sixties, residents successfully fought off a massive city plan to slice the top off the hill for a highway connector. The summit remains wild today, covered in native bunchgrass and protected from any concrete sprawl.
