Folsom Mural

The mural you are approaching on Folsom Street near twenty-third Street is titled Birds of the Americas. It was completed in September of twenty twenty, transforming what was once a plain restaurant supply store into a vibrant landmark for the neighborhood. Lead artist Josue Rojas designed the piece to serve as a lyrical tribute to people from the community who have passed away. The centerpiece of the mural is a large, colorful toucan, which was painted to honor the life of Sean Monterossa. Nearby, you will see a depiction of a quetzal, the national bird of Guatemala, which stands as a memorial to Amilcar Perez-Lopez and Luis Gongora Pat. Both men were killed within five blocks of this very wall, grounding the artwork in the immediate history and local struggles of the Mission District.
