The San Francisco Eagle Bar stands as a primary anchor of the city's leather and kink subculture. Founded in nineteen eighty-one, it occupies a corner at twelfth and Harrison streets that has served as a center for the LGBTQ community for decades. While many similar establishments in the neighborhood closed during waves of urban renewal and the height of the AIDS crisis, this bar persisted through community resilience and advocacy. Its long history earned it the status of a city historical landmark in twenty twenty-one, making it the first leather community site to receive that official designation in San Francisco.
