Yerba Buena Center for the Arts

The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts stands on land that once served as an Ohlone Indian burial ground. After decades of conflict over the redevelopment of the South of Market district, the site evolved into a space meant to bridge the gap between the city's commercial ambitions and the needs of its local communities. It opened in nineteen ninety three as a cultural anchor, designed to hold the city accountable to its promise of providing a public space for arts and social exchange.
