The Church of the Gesu stands apart on Northeast Second Avenue with its twin towers and a weathered, tan facade that stretches above the surrounding glass high-rises. Founded in eighteen ninety-six, it is the oldest Catholic parish in Miami. During the nineteen sixties, Father David Russell refused to allow the church doors to be locked, even as the neighborhood changed rapidly around it. He kept them open for refugees arriving from Cuba, offering shelter and mass in Spanish to those seeking a new beginning.
