Miami-Dade County Courthouse

The Miami-Dade County Courthouse is a wedding-cake structure of limestone that climbs twenty-eight stories above the city streets. When it opened in nineteen twenty-eight, its tower made it the tallest building in Florida. During the Great Hurricane of nineteen twenty-six, construction workers famously hid inside the half-finished shell, bracing themselves against the steel beams while the storm dismantled the city around them. They held the structure steady, and it remained the center of the county’s legal life ever since.
