Margaret Mitchell House

The Margaret Mitchell House is a three-story, Tudor Revival apartment building with a pale, stucco exterior and dark brown wooden trim. In the nineteen thirties, Margaret Mitchell lived in a cramped, ground-floor unit here she jokingly called The Dump. She spent three years working at a portable typewriter on a small card table, writing the manuscript for Gone with the Wind. During that time, she hid her pages under rugs and behind sofa cushions whenever visitors knocked on her door.
