The Fox Theatre carries a distinct, onion-domed minaret that rises above the Atlanta skyline, decorated in gold leaf and terracotta tile. Originally intended as a lavish headquarters for the Shriners, the building transformed into a movie palace during the Great Depression. When the theater faced demolition in the nineteen seventies, the citizens of Atlanta raised enough money to buy the property themselves. They saved the grand auditorium, keeping its imitation Arabian courtyard complete with twinkling stars and drifting clouds fixed to the ceiling.
