Centennial Olympic Park

Centennial Olympic Park covers twenty-one acres of downtown Atlanta with a flat, green expanse anchored by the Fountain of Rings. Billy Payne, a local lawyer, envisioned this space as the gathering spot for the nineteen ninety-six Summer Olympics. Before the games, the area consisted of derelict warehouses and abandoned lots. Construction crews raced to finish the park in time for the opening ceremonies. During those games, a pipe bomb exploded near the fountain, killing two people and injuring over one hundred others.
