Big Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church features a distinctive, large square tower topped by a brightly lit sign that reads Jesus Saves. This building stands on the site where formerly enslaved people established a congregation in eighteen sixty-five. In nineteen twenty-four, when fire destroyed the original structure, the members rebuilt it. During the construction of the new tower, a worker accidentally dropped a heavy tool that crashed through the roof, narrowly missing the choir practicing below.
