The King Center is identified by the long, rectangular reflecting pool that stretches toward the burial vaults of Martin Luther King Junior and Coretta Scott King. Before this plaza existed, the neighborhood held only the family home and the nearby church. After nineteen sixty-eight, Coretta Scott King transformed the site from a makeshift memorial into an official institution. She insisted on a place that would preserve her husband’s papers and teach the philosophy of nonviolent social change to every visitor who arrived here.
